    Çiğdem Akın

She made quite a splash with the Barbie show at the last fashion week. The show’s sponsor was the cult toy brand Barbie. Barbie had previously sponsored Moschino’s show at Milan Fashion Week. It is a source of pride that this time it signed a special collaboration with a Turkish designer.

The designer generally uses unusual seaming when creating a collection. As a result, the colours and seams she uses lead a timeless trend. Çiğdem Akın designs are pieces you can wear comfortably every season. She also offers a style suited to every body type.

Turkish Designers Avenue and designer retail

One of the biggest challenges for independent designers is showing their collections at a point of sale with heavy footfall. That is why Turkish Designers Avenue brings together Turkish designers from different fields in the same space, from ready-to-wear to jewellery and from bags to design objects, offering a model that answers this need. It is an advantage for visitors too: it is possible to see many local brands up close along a single route.

The roots of the store chain hosting the project go back to Paris; you can read about the brand’s history in the Galeries Lafayette entry on Wikipedia. For more on one of the designers taking part in the project, take a look at our article on Bashaques and Başak Cankeş.
