Carolina Herrera showed its Spring-Summer 2027 collection during New York Fashion Week in September 2026, in the grand promenade of the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. Designed by the house’s creative director Wes Gordon, the collection coincided with the 45th anniversary of the house’s founding. According to a video published by FashionUnited, the front row included the house’s founder, Carolina Herrera, alongside international buyers and members of the press. The yellow tulip installation at the centre of the venue became the show’s most talked-about image.
A promenade lined with yellow tulips
As reported by Galerie magazine, some 30,000 yellow tulips were lined up on both sides of the runway. The heavy, theatrical air of the bronze-panelled hall was softened by the flowers’ vivid colour. The set served as a frame that brought to the stage the joyful, glamorous elegance the house has long embraced. According to Galerie, the collection comprised 63 looks in total.
The anniversary emphasis is no coincidence. Carolina Herrera showed her first collection 45 years ago, also in New York, at the Metropolitan Club on the Upper East Side. Galerie recalls that guests at that first show included names such as Diana Vreeland and Andy Warhol, while Iman walked the runway. This season, the house chose once again to highlight its bond with the city where it was founded.
Daytime tailoring, evening volume
In FashionUnited’s assessment, the collection struck a balance between sharp tailoring for day and voluminous dressing for evening. The show opened with monochrome polka-dot looks, high-waisted cigarette trousers and crisp button-down shirts. Then came tiered romantic dresses and ruffled silk mousselines. Dropped waistlines, detailed floral appliqués, light tweed combinations and graphic shift dresses were also among the collection’s standout pieces. FashionUnited notes that some of these dresses referenced drawings from The New Yorker archive.
Galerie’s look-by-look details support this picture: a powder-pink silk organza dress with a ruffled skirt, a drop-waist white cotton day dress with a halter neck, a long column evening gown in silver floral lace and, towards the finale, a yellow ruffled evening gown. A checked jacket with yellow fringe and a mint-green sequinned dress finished with a coral cardigan showed the collection’s more playful side.
Inspired by the archive, adapted for today
Gordon does not want the collection to be read as a retrospective. “There are references to the history of the House, of course, but the intention was never to revisit the past literally,” he told Galerie, stressing that while there are of course nods to the house’s history, the aim was never to recreate the past verbatim. For the designer, the real question is what the ideas that define Carolina Herrera look like today and tomorrow. FashionUnited likewise writes that archival silhouettes were recalibrated to today’s standards of wearability.
According to Galerie, one of the season’s notable collaborations was with the Andy Warhol Foundation. Warhol’s portrait of his friend and muse Carolina Herrera was used on an embroidered and appliquéd wool mini dress and on a bag. The magazine reports that this is the first time the image has been licensed and that proceeds will go to the foundation.
Why it matters
Carolina Herrera is one of the best-known exponents of the grand evening gown tradition in American fashion. Speaking to Galerie, Gordon describes being chosen for the role by Herrera as one of the greatest privileges of his career, and says the house’s clear identity gives him room for freedom. The 45th anniversary collection is a fine example of how a heritage house can use its archive without turning it into nostalgia. The clear divide between day and night also shows that the house wants to remain a strong contender both on the red carpet and in the everyday wardrobe.
Seen from Türkiye, Carolina Herrera signatures such as ruffles, polka dots and floral appliqués look set to stay strong next season too, especially in occasion and wedding fashion. You can follow the dates of the New York, London, Milan and Paris weeks in our Fashion Week Calendar 2026-2027 guide.
