The CFDA Fashion Awards, American fashion’s annual gathering, took place on the evening of 2 November 2026 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. We covered the winners in detail in our 2026 CFDA Fashion Awards report; in this article, we turn to the night’s other stage: the red carpet. Reading the looks compiled by People magazine alongside Tom + Lorenzo’s designer credits, three clear stories of the evening emerge: Saint Laurent’s golden shimmer, denim’s promotion to the red carpet, and pieces that played with proportion, some of them straight from the archive.
A golden evening: Saint Laurent and Anthony Vaccarello
The night’s most legible shared theme was gold. Hailey Bieber, Rosé and Zoë Kravitz all walked the carpet in Saint Laurent looks by Anthony Vaccarello. As People reports, the choice was read as a gesture of support for Vaccarello, whom the CFDA honoured as International Designer of the Year this year.
Although the three looks shared the same colour palette, they differed in construction. Hailey Bieber’s piece featured a brocade lace top, faux fur cuffs and a below-the-knee skirt; metallic leather sandals completed the look. Rosé paired a short gold top with a matching high-slit skirt and also opted for Saint Laurent’s gold sandals. Zoë Kravitz combined a gold lamé bodysuit with a midi-length skirt, wearing the brand’s slingback heels. The same house, the same colour, three different silhouettes: a picture of how flexibly the sharp, night-focused language Vaccarello has built at Saint Laurent can be used.
Denim on the red carpet
One of the night’s most striking looks belonged to Demi Moore. Moore wore a halterneck denim gown that Zac Posen created especially for GapStudio. According to People, the dress’s design was inspired by the stitching and construction details of Gap jeans. The choice was no coincidence: Gap Inc. was this year’s recipient of the Amazon Fashion Innovation Award. Elevating a fabric seen as the symbol of everyday dressing to gala scale, the gown also showcased Posen’s design work under the Gap umbrella.

Denim was on stage in menswear, too. Musician Shaboozey layered a cream Ralph Lauren blazer with a white waistcoat and shirt, tucked into jeans. A bolo tie and a belt with turquoise details gave the look a nod to the American West. Remembering that Ralph Lauren won this year’s American Menswear Designer of the Year award, the look seemed like a reflection of the brand’s classic American codes on the night.
Playing with proportion and pieces from the archive
Another trend on the red carpet was designs that exaggerated a particular point of the silhouette. Allison Janney appeared in a high-necked fuchsia evening gown by Christian Siriano; the dress’s most striking feature was its oversized satin sleeves. In Laufey’s Thom Browne dress, a peplum flaring from the waist stood out. Tinashe’s look came from Christopher John Rogers, and Naomi Osaka’s from a polka-dot custom design by Miss Claire Sullivan. Each offered an alternative to the straight-line evening gown by shifting volume to the shoulder, the sleeve, the hip or the print.

On the archive front, the standout was the evening’s host, Keke Palmer. As People reports, Palmer walked the carpet in a vintage Bob Mackie gown first worn by Raquel Welch in 1975. Wearing archive pieces on the red carpet has become a favourite approach of celebrity stylists in recent years; it means both paying tribute to fashion history and bringing an existing piece back into the spotlight instead of producing something new.
American designers in the spotlight
By the very nature of the CFDA night, the red carpet also served as a showcase for American brands. Pamela Anderson and Rose Byrne chose Carolina Herrera. Elle Fanning carried an embellished Coach bag with a pale pink dress and a floor-length coat. Brittany Snow wore a backless, mint-green silky custom design by Cult Gaia. The carpet thus brought together a wide spectrum, from established fashion houses to young American labels.

Why it matters
The CFDA red carpet is not a themed night like the Met Gala; still, it carries a distinct meaning because it connects to awards given by the industry from within. A significant share of the outfits worn this year referred directly to the awards: Saint Laurent’s gold to Vaccarello’s honour, GapStudio denim to Gap Inc.’s innovation award, and Shaboozey’s Ralph Lauren to the menswear designer of the year award. In this sense, the red carpet became less a style contest than a stage on which brands and designers told their stories.
Seen from Turkey, the lesson is clear: tying outfit choices at award ceremonies to the narrative of that night makes both the designer and the wearer more visible. It is possible to create similar stages for our local designers’ experiments in bringing archive pieces or everyday fabrics to gala scale.
