Sara Pagliaroli lives in the province of Bergamo. After graduating as a business expert and foreign-language correspondent, in 2014 she took part in the national Miss Italy contest, finishing among the top 15 finalists. For a year she has been working as a model with one of the best-known agencies in Milan, and at the same time, thanks to her passion for football, she has managed to carve out a small space on TV as the presenter of a football segment.
Did you always want to be a model, or did you stumble upon it, get discovered, etc.?
Non c’è mai stata una volta che a scuola quando le maestre mi chiedevano cosa volevo fare da grande, ho risposto: la “modella”, è stata una cosa inaspettata, che desideravo tanto ma era un segreto che tenevo per me. Nemmeno la mia famiglia sapeva di questo sogno.
There was never a time at school, when the teachers asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, that I answered “a model”. It was something unexpected, something I wanted very much but kept as a secret to myself. Not even my family knew about this dream.

First steps into modelling and inspiration
Who or what inspired you to become a model?
Ho sempre adorato il mondo della moda, dei bei vestiti… Credo che grazie a miss Italia ho preso coraggio. Per affrontare questo mondo che vedevo così tanto lontano.
I have always adored the world of fashion and beautiful clothes… I believe it was thanks to Miss Italy that I found the courage to take on this world that had seemed so far away to me.
How did you get started in the modelling business?
Finito il concorso di miss Italia sono stata contattata da qualche agenzia di Milano. È stato un sogno. Solo dopo una sentita decisione ho scelto la mia agenzia madre.
After the Miss Italy contest ended, I was contacted by a few agencies in Milan. It was a dream. Only after a heartfelt decision did I choose my mother agency.
The best and hardest sides of the job
What is your favourite or most exciting aspect of being a model?
Credo ci siano molti aspetti interessanti nell’essere modella. Ma credo ci siano altrettanti aspetti che la gente non conosce.
Le persone pensano sia un mondo lussuoso di pochi sforzi e notevoli guadagni. Ma non è così. Per fare questo lavoro bisogna avere Costanza, personalità, e forza di volontà.
Non è semplice confrontarti ogni giorno con modelle mozzafiato e non cadere in dispiaceri.
I think there are many interesting aspects to being a model. But I think there are just as many aspects that people don’t know about.
People think it is a luxurious world with little effort and big earnings. But it isn’t. To do this job you need perseverance, personality and willpower.
It is not easy to measure yourself every day against breathtaking models without becoming disheartened.
What do you like least?
Come ho detto prima, non mi piace il fatto che la gente sottovaluti il grande stress giornaliero a cui è sottoposta una modella.
As I said before, I don’t like the fact that people underestimate the huge daily stress a model is under.
Have you encountered any surprises along the way?
Diverse. La sorpresa più grande la ricevi quando pensi di non essere stata considerata ad un casting e invece poi ti confermano. Quelle sono soddisfazioni
Several. The biggest surprise comes when you think you haven’t been considered at a casting and then they confirm you after all. Those are real satisfactions.
Surprises and awkward moments
What has been your most awkward moment (of your modelling career)?
Credo di aver vissuto diversi momenti imbarazzanti. Anche se ora come ora non mi viene in mente nulla di eclatante
I think I have lived through several embarrassing moments, although right now nothing particularly striking comes to mind.
How would you describe yourself as a model in three words?
Decisa, disponibile e carismatica

Out of all the places your career has taken you, which was the most memorable?
Penso di aver visto così tanti posti in poco tempo che sono grata a tutti coloro che hanno permesso questo viaggio nel mondo.
Sicuramente il mio primo lavoro in Portogallo è stato il più sentito. Quello che mi porto dentro da sempre. Non scorderò mai la paura di partire sola di non conoscere nulla e nessuno. Una volta fatta è stato il lavoro più bello che ricordo di aver fatto.
I think I have seen so many places in such a short time that I am grateful to everyone who made this journey around the world possible.
My first job in Portugal was definitely the one I felt most deeply, the one I have carried inside me ever since. I will never forget the fear of leaving alone, not knowing anything or anyone. Once I had done it, it was the most beautiful job I remember doing.
Photographers and shoots
Who is your favourite photographer? Why?
Non ho un fotografo preferito. Mi trovo molto bene con Luca Gelmi, Daniele Maffietti e Luca Pozzaglio
I don’t have a favourite photographer. I work very well with Luca Gelmi, Daniele Maffietti and Luca Pozzaglio.
What makes a photo shoot hard for you, and why?
Penso che all’inizio la cosa più difficile sia instaurare un legame col fotografo. È la cosa più importante, se non c’è feeling dall’inizio è dura andare avanti.
I think the hardest thing at the start is building a connection with the photographer. It is the most important thing; if there is no chemistry from the beginning, it is tough to carry on.
Is there a difference in posing when you are doing a cover and an editorial?
No non ci sono differenze sostanziali… Credo serva spirito di adattamento.
No, there are no substantial differences… I think what you need is adaptability.
Is there an artistic or general difference between doing editorials/covers in Europe as opposed to the USA?
Purtroppo non lo so. Non sono ancora stata negli USA ma è il mio prossimo obiettivo.
Unfortunately I don’t know. I haven’t been to the USA yet, but it is my next goal.
What the industry asks for
Did anyone in the industry ask you to change your look, name, etc.? If so, what did you do?
Si, per lavori di hairstylist mi hanno chiesto cambi look ai capelli. Ma ho sempre rifiutato. Solo una volta mi sono lasciata scurire i capelli. Era una cosa che volevo da tempo.
Yes, for hairstylist jobs they asked me to change my hair. But I always refused. Only once did I let them darken my hair; it was something I had wanted for a long time.
What tips and advice do you have for aspiring models just starting out? Something you wish someone had told you?
Credo che le ragazze che vogliono fare questo lavoro debbano sapere che non è sempre facile reggere a questi ritmi. Non si hanno mai orari ne giorni fissi di lavoro.
L’agente comunica la sera verso le 19.00 quello che la modella deve fare il giorno dopo e quindi non si può organizzare nulla se non il giorno stesso.
Inoltre per fare questo lavoro bisogna avere la testa. Altrimenti è un attimo cadere negli eccessi
I think girls who want to do this job should know that it is not always easy to keep up with its pace. You never have fixed working hours or days.
The agent tells the model around 7 pm in the evening what she has to do the next day, so you can’t organise anything except on the day itself.
Also, to do this job you need to keep a clear head. Otherwise it only takes a moment to fall into excess.
Agencies and warning signs
Have you had any negative experiences with model agencies or talent scouts? What are the top 3 warning signs to look out for?
Penso ci siano tante agenzie false e opportuniste quante modelle nel mondo.
Sono davvero poche le agenzie di cui ci si può fidare.
Innanzitutto non devono chiedere mai soldi per book. Inoltre non devono sfruttare le ragazze con lavori poco pagati.
I think there are as many fake and opportunistic agencies as there are models in the world.
There are really very few agencies you can trust.
First of all, they must never ask for money for a portfolio (book). And they must not exploit girls with poorly paid jobs.
Would you share some of your future goals and your life motto? Any words of wisdom that get you through life and your professional career?

The agent relationship and the fashion world
What should a relationship between an agent and a model look like?
Deve esserci un rapporto di fiducia innanzitutto. La modella deve fidarsi del booker. E questo deve fare in modo che la modella si trovi sempre a suo agio.
First of all, there must be a relationship of trust. The model has to trust the booker, and the booker must make sure the model always feels at ease.
How do you feel fashion has empowered you?
Is the fashion world what you expected it to be?
Non è tutto come sembra… Ci sono tante cose che la gente non vede finché non prova sulla sua pelle.
Not everything is as it seems… There are so many things people don’t see until they experience them first-hand.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
Mi piace rilassarmi godermi la mia vita fuori dal caos di Milano.
Amo andare in palestra e prendermi cura di me. Lavoro col mio corpo tutti i giorni, glielo devo.
I like to relax and enjoy my life away from the chaos of Milan.
I love going to the gym and taking care of myself. I work with my body every day; I owe it that.
Fashion, style and favourite brands
Who are your favourite fashion designers?
Amo guess. Trovo che le modelle scelte da loro siano le più sexy e belle che ci siano.

I love Guess. I find that the models they choose are the sexiest and most beautiful there are.

Credo che Guess o liu jo siano i migliori come fitting.

What things in your wardrobe would you never throw away?
Mi piace rinnovare il mio guardaroba di anno in anno. Non c’è una cosa a cui sono particolarmente legata.
I like to renew my wardrobe from year to year. There isn’t anything I’m particularly attached to.
Nostalgia for an era and a style icon
What era would you like to bring back?
L’era in cui le donne belle erano quelle con un giusto seno. E un po di curve. A differenza di oggi che va di moda il fisico longilineo.
The era when beautiful women were those with a proper bust and a few curves, unlike today, when a long, lean physique is in fashion.
Who is your style icon?
Mi piace Chiara Ferragni anche se devo dire che amo mischiare più stili diversi
I like Chiara Ferragni, although I must say I love mixing lots of different styles.

Do you have any beauty or skincare tips or tricks to look fresh and rested for early-morning photo shoots?
No, purtroppo non sono mai stata brava a sperimentare queste tecniche. Opto sempre per dell’acqua fresca che attiva la circolazione. E un olio naturale per ammortire la pelle del viso.
No, unfortunately I have never been good at experimenting with these techniques. I always opt for cool water, which gets the circulation going, and a natural oil to soften the skin on my face.
Beauty at home, exercise and the future
Do you believe in homemade recipes? Do you have one to share with us?
No come ho detto prima sfortunatamente non sono mai stata brava in queste cose. Mi sono sempre affidata alla cosmesi.
No; as I said before, unfortunately I have never been good at these things. I have always relied on cosmetics.
How much attention do you pay to meditation & exercise, or is it all natural?
Faccio molta attività fisica, amo andare in palestra e uscirne solo quando sento di aver lavorato ogni muscolo del mio corpo. È gratificante fare attività fisica. Ed è la chiave per una buona salute.
I do a lot of physical activity. I love going to the gym and leaving only when I feel I have worked every muscle in my body. Exercise is rewarding, and it is the key to good health.
Next career?
Se non andasse bene come modella mi piacerebbe continuare a fare la giornalista sportiva.
If things didn’t work out as a model, I would like to carry on working as a sports journalist.
Do people act differently around you since you became a model?
Si purtroppo o per fortuna tante persone sono cambiate nei miei confronti. In alcuni casi la cosa mi infastidisce. Perché ho sempre odiato i complimenti eccessivi e monotoni. In altri casi la gente si è allontanata. Un po per invidia un po per necessità. Ma va bene così.
Yes, unfortunately or fortunately, many people have changed towards me. In some cases it bothers me, because I have always hated excessive, monotonous compliments. In other cases, people have drifted away, partly out of envy, partly out of necessity. But that’s fine.
Music, TV series and magazines
Favourite kind of music? Favourite television series or film?
Amo la musica in generale. È la mia compagna di viaggio. Ogni canzone ogni nota mi riporta ad un Luogo o momento. Non c’è un tipo di musica che preferisco, amo la musica.
La mia serie televisiva preferita prima era gossip girl. Ora invece mi sto appassionata di serie TV dove si scoprono segreti mi intrigano.
I love music in general. It is my travelling companion. Every song, every note takes me back to a place or a moment. There isn’t one type of music I prefer; I love music.
My favourite TV series used to be Gossip Girl. Now, though, I’m hooked on TV series where secrets are uncovered; they intrigue me.

Queste sono le cose fondamentali.
Happiness is staying true to yourself even when others think you are different. Having your loved ones: family, friendships and love. Happiness is travelling and discovering the world.
These are the fundamental things.
The past and self-confidence
If you could change one thing in the past years, what would it be?
Non cambierei nulla, tutto quello che ho fatto mi ha portato qui. Solo a volte crederei più in me stessa.
I wouldn’t change anything; everything I have done has brought me here. Only that, at times, I would believe in myself more.
People have said I look like …
Mi fanno tanti complimenti, ma non li prendo mai sul serio… Insomma in confronto alle modelle a cui mi paragonano non sono assolutamente nessuno.
People pay me lots of compliments, but I never take them seriously… In short, compared with the models they compare me to, I am absolutely nobody.
