On 5 November 2026, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) in New York announced the Costume Institute’s spring 2027 exhibition and, with it, the theme of the Met Gala: “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday”. In Turkish, the title roughly translates as “Olağanüstü: Moda ve Gündeliğin Şiirselliği”. Fashion’s most talked-about night will take place on Monday, 3 May 2027; the exhibition will open to visitors on 9 May 2027 and run until 9 January 2028. The new theme comes after the cancellation of the John Galliano exhibition, which had been in the headlines for months.

Jeans, T-shirts, puffer jackets: the ordinary enters the museum
The exhibition puts at its centre the pieces we wear every day and rarely think about. According to the announcement, it will explore garments found in everyone’s wardrobe, such as jeans, T-shirts, sweatshirts, trench coats and raincoats, and puffer jackets, and how designers have reinterpreted these familiar forms. With this, the Met Gala makes a marked departure from the weighty, history- and craftsmanship-focused themes of recent years.
The exhibition will be made up of two main sections. The first, titled “Familiar Forms”, will focus on the classic staples of everyday wear and their transformation on the runway. The second, “Common Matter”, will feature materials and objects not usually associated with clothing. The announcement states that examples in which designers have turned materials such as paper, plastic and aluminium into garments will be on display.
Andrew Bolton’s approach
The exhibition is curated by Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute. Speaking to Vogue, Bolton said, “It was really important to come up with an exhibition that wasn’t just a masterwork show”, stressing how much it mattered to him that it not be merely a line-up of masterpieces. In the same interview, Bolton is reported to have revealed that he had no back-up plan for the Galliano exhibition. The gala’s co-chairs and dress code have not yet been announced.
Why was the Galliano exhibition cancelled?
The Costume Institute’s original plan for 2027 was “John Galliano: Horizons”, an exhibition examining the career of the British designer John Galliano. The project, however, drew a strong backlash over the antisemitic and racist remarks the designer made in a Paris bar in 2010 and 2011, some of which were caught on video. Following those incidents, Galliano was dismissed from his role as creative director at Dior; he attributed his remarks to his alcohol and substance addiction at the time and has said he is sober today.
Following the backlash, Galliano announced in an Instagram post at the end of August that he was withdrawing from the exhibition. In that statement, the designer said he continues to take full responsibility for the pain caused by his past remarks. Andrew Bolton, for his part, acknowledged the pain and concern the exhibition had caused and said, “After extensive discussion, I support the decision not to proceed.”

With the announcement of the new theme, the page has been turned on the controversy; reactions, however, are mixed. Some outlets read the theme as a bold change of direction, while others question how the idea of everyday clothing will square with the Met Gala’s lavish red carpet.
A denim era on the red carpet?
Guests at the Met Gala traditionally dress according to the exhibition’s theme. Since this year’s theme points directly to pieces such as T-shirts, jeans and sweatshirts, how designers will transform these ordinary forms into gala attire is already a subject of curiosity. Denim’s increasingly frequent appearances on the red carpet are notable in this respect: at the CFDA Fashion Awards in early November, looks reinterpreting denim as eveningwear also stood out.
The “Common Matter” section, meanwhile, opens up an experimental field for designers when it comes to materials. The fact that pieces made of paper, plastic or metal will be on display shows that the theme has a topical resonance at a time when debates about recycling and reuse are intensifying.
Seen from Turkey
Treating everyday clothing as a design object is a meaningful subject for the Turkish fashion industry too. Turkey is one of the world’s major production hubs in exactly the product groups at the heart of this exhibition, such as denim and knitwear. The reinterpretation of ordinary pieces in a museum and on the world’s most-watched red carpet is a reminder to young designers and manufacturers of how decisive design can be not only in eveningwear but also in everyday pieces.
