Istanbul Modest Fashion Week and the rise of modest fashion
“Modest fashion” — “muhafazakâr moda” in Turkish — covers designs aimed at women who prefer clothes that cover the body more. This preference may be linked to religious belief, personal values or simply taste. What counts as “covered” also varies from culture to culture. In recent years in particular, the field has become a distinct branch of fashion, with its own designers, influencers and online stores.
Istanbul Modest Fashion Week is an event that aims to bring this interest together on a single stage. Its venue, Haydarpaşa Station, is one of the landmark buildings of the Asian side, offering a powerful backdrop that recalls the city’s role as a bridge between East and West. Alongside the shows, the Istanbul Modest Fashion Week programme includes talks, designer stands, workshops and conferences, so visitors don’t just watch the runway — they can also take part in the conversations the industry is having.
You can read how modest fashion is defined on a global scale in Wikipedia’s modest fashion entry. And if you’re interested in the history of Istanbul’s fashion weeks, take a look at our feature on Istanbul Fashion Week past and present.
Events like this are about more than runway shows. They give designers the chance to meet buyers, brands reach a new audience and visitors discover new names that suit their style. Standout elements in modest fashion include long cuts, layered outfits, fluid draped fabrics and colour palettes that work with a headscarf. But each designer enriches this basic line with their own interpretation.
