Nearly a decade after his death, Azzedine Alaïa, one of the most revered couturiers in fashion history, is being celebrated with a major retrospective in the United States for the first time. The Legion of Honor, part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, opens the exhibition Azzedine Alaïa: Sculpting Fashion to the public on 21 November 2026. The exhibition will be on view until 11 April 2027 and was organised together with the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa in Paris.

From the sculpture studio to haute couture
The exhibition’s title was not chosen at random. Before entering the fashion world, the Tunisian-born Alaïa studied sculpture at the Institute of Fine Arts in Tunis, then settled in Paris and devoted his career to fashion. Shaping fabric on the body like a sculptor, with silhouettes that hugged the figure and all but redrew it, he rose to become one of the most celebrated designers of his generation. Alaïa, who died in 2017, was also known for ignoring the fashion calendar and trends, showing his collections only when they were ready.
The museum places precisely this sculptural approach at the heart of the exhibition. As FashionUnited reports, Alaïa’s designs will be displayed alongside the Legion of Honor’s extensive collection of Auguste Rodin sculptures. Visitors will thus have the chance to compare the perception of the body in bronze and marble with its perception in fabric, in the same space.
What’s in the exhibition?
The museum’s announcement, as well as reports by Wallpaper and FashionUnited, state that the exhibition features around 80 pieces tracing different periods of the designer’s career. Among them are silhouettes worn by stars such as Tina Turner and Rihanna. The exhibition spreads across the museum’s special exhibition galleries on the lower level and several rooms on the first floor; in places, Alaïa’s designs are presented together with works from the museum’s permanent collection.

Highlights from Alaïa’s private collection
Perhaps the most intriguing part of the exhibition is a selection of pieces the designer collected himself. Alaïa was not only a designer but also a passionate collector of fashion. According to FashionUnited, this selection, never before shown in the US, includes works by names who influenced him, such as Madame Grès, Charles James, Balenciaga and Adrian. Wallpaper also highlights that the exhibition features work by the couturiers who inspired Alaïa. Visitors will thus be able to see how Alaïa looked at fashion history and which masters nourished the language he built for himself.
The exhibition is co-curated by Laura L. Camerlengo, who heads the museum’s department of costume and textile arts, and Olivier Saillard, director of the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa. In a statement quoted by FashionUnited, Saillard said:
“Azzedine would have been particularly proud to see his work exhibited in an art museum”
In other words, Saillard said that Alaïa would have been especially proud to see his work shown in an art museum. The remark also sums up the designer’s view of fashion as an art form.
Why it matters
Alaïa has been the subject of many exhibitions in Europe, but this is the first retrospective on this scale at an art museum in the US. It means the designer’s legacy will reach a new generation and a different audience. A fashion exhibition sharing space with the work of a master sculptor like Rodin is also a powerful example of how thin the line between fashion and the fine arts has become.
Seen from Turkey, too, the exhibition offers an important lesson: Alaïa was a designer who refused to keep pace with the fashion weeks, putting craftsmanship and pattern-cutting technique above all else. In today’s era of rapidly consumed collections, his approach remains a guiding light for young designers. For anyone heading to San Francisco, the exhibition will be open throughout the winter.
